You will enjoy this movie if…
- You are into anime
- You appreciate sick hand drawn animations, particularly samurai fights
- Don't mind blood and gore
- Like music from RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan
Realistically the audience for this is niche. An anime about a ganja smoking samurai bossman, with an afro, originating from Japan, is something i would have spent many nights praying for. Fortune has it that the praying was not necessary, some people actually went ahead and made it. I'm very grateful.
Although the story is cool enough, the illustration style is the main reason i love this film. Everything from the explosive duels to the peaceful landscapes are fresh and truly impressive.
If you haven't seen the Afro Samurai mini series i recommend you watch that first. I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary but it will help you understand what's going on a bit better. A lot of the character motivations won't make much sense otherwise.
